Reconfigurable radio technologies are becoming essential to support the requirements of the wireless market: network operators and wireless service providers in all market domains need to contain their capital and operational expenditures while supporting a proliferation of wireless standards and wireless end users, be they business travelers or first responders in a national emergency, are demanding radio technologies that allow them to communicate with whoever they need to, whenever they need to and wherever they are.

This conference will explore these requirements across domains and present innovative solutions in development to address them.

Asynchronous Network Signal Sensing and Classification Techniques

Objective:
Develop a low-cost sensor network that can perform signal sensing and automatic modulation classification (AMC) of weak signals that normally cannot be detected with traditional single sensor methods.

High Performance/Throughput, Low Latency and Low Power Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Cognitive Radio (CR)

Objective:
Develop a high throughput, low latency and low power consumption, development portable Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to enhance the capability of Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Cognitive Radio (CR).

Combined spectral management/ satellite receiver modem
Proposals Accepted:
December 13, 2010 – January 12, 2011
Objective:
The objective is to construct a software defined receiver that coherently captures many simultaneous signals in 1 GHz of bandwidth around 20.7 GHz produced by as many as 8 separate but abutting transmit elements having noise floors potentially differing by >10 dB. DSP software provided must be able simultaneously to separate this IBW into software selectable depth FFT displays of the 8 transponders and into up to 100 arbitrarily centered signals having individual IBW of from 250 kHz to 500 MHz. Demodulation software for 10 commonly used waveforms should also be provided and selectable with minimum delay at the time of execution or via a canned script. In addition, the ability to record all the data in real time is desirable and to record the demodulated signal subsets is essential. All these features should be able to run in real time. The abilities to receive simultaneously other SatCom bands, e.g. 7.25-7.75GHz, and inclusion of compatible software to detect intruding users and adaptively remove interfering signals are desirable.

Objective:
Research and develop a multi-channel, programmable, scalable, and extensible RF-channel emulator that will enable laboratory verification of next-generation military and commercial radio and waveform capabilities by emulating a high-fidelity operationally-representative radio frequency environment for networks of 8 to 100 radio node

The US Navy’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is focused on developing technologies that meet both specific Naval needs as well as general Department of Defense needs. Many of the Navy’s SBIR Program’s Phase II companies also participate in the Transition Assistance Program (TAP). One of the key goals of the TAP is to connect these SBIR funded technologies to potential users.      Sprint (NYSE:S) today made the odd move of announcing a $5 billion network evolution plan without naming what technology it will be evolving to.
    The CDMA operator named Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) and Samsung as vendors for a new network modernization project that will allow Sprint to support its 2G, 3G and eventually 4G networks on multiple frequencies over the same multi-mode base stations.

With Dell, Microsoft and Google’s recent interest in the use of TV white spaces for broadband access, the cellular operator’s competitive advantage of a high-value spectrum licence may not last.
     The challenge for cellular operators is to stay ahead of this new group of competitors. If there are benefits to be had from changes in the regulatory environment and from the dynamic spectrum access technologies this encourages, cellular operators need to ensure that they rather than their new competition are the first to benefit. …

      Analogue integrated circuit design has never been easy. But as fabs start ramping their 28nm processes, the problems facing designers trying to put mixed signal circuitry on to the chips have reached a new level of complexity.
     According to Professor Franco Maloberti of the University of Pavia, process scaling into the deep submicron region brings one crucial improvement: speed. The unity gain current frequency is almost inversely proportional to the square of the gate length, so sub 45nm processes push cmos into the realm of 60GHz wireless communications. …

Taiwan and Canada sign MOU

     Taiwan and Canada signed a memorandum of understanding on information and communication technology cooperation in Ottawa Dec. 6. Under the agreement, the two sides will work together to develop the next generation of cognitive radio technology. The MOU was signed by National Science Council Minister Lee Lou-chuang, ROC representative to Canada David Ta-wei Lee, as well as Veena Rawat, president of the Communications Research Centre Canada, and the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei. Lee Lou-chuang said the NSC and CRC have been long-term partners in various fields, including monolith microwave integrated circuits, satellite antenna system engineering, biomedical chips, and wireless communication ICs for environmental monitoring. He said the range of applications of cognitive radio technology is extensive, such as 3-D television, high-definition TV and biomedicine.

Huawei plans mobile broadband tech dev’t with M4S buy

     Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd is buying all of M4S as part of a cooperation agreement with Option to develop mobile broadband technology for Europe, the company said. The purchase price was about Rs.46.90 crore ($10.5 million), according to Will Strauss, principal analyst, Forward Concepts.

Pentek Expands SDR Market Leadership by Integrating L-Band RF Tuner with Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA
